Quick Comic Reviews - October 18th, 2010

Still trying to catch up after the peed on laptop incident.  We're still taking donations or check out some ads and help the recovery fund.  Or don't.  We do appreciate the donations we've gotten.  In the grand scheme of things it seems trivial.  However, to the flat ass broke people out there, pretty big deal.  Anyway, if you like comics (and I know you do) we've got some more fun stuff.

New Avengers #5 - Written by Brian Michael Bendis and Penciled by Stuart Immonen.  The mystery of who is after the Eye of Agamotto continues.  And this issue we have the White Lantern Iron First.  Wait, wrong title.  But Iron Fist in a white outfit is actually pretty decent looking.  In fact, I kind of prefer it, so nice costume change there.  Will he keep it?  Probably not, but nice to see.  So it seems like we're starting to find out who is really after the Eye, and if it is who they're thinking it is, this could be very interesting.  The only problem I had is that it wasn't Strange himself who really figured it out.  I do like the solution they come up with at the end of the issue, it made some weird kind of sense and made it fun.  The artwork was top notch as usual, no complaints here.  The mixture of this team is the most interesting, which makes it one of the best Avengers titles right now.  Having Power First and Doctor Strange in the fore-front makes it even more interesting and the storyline works pretty well.  Worth checking out and a solid issue to pick-up.

Bruce Wayne the Road Home Batgirl #1 - Written by Bryan Q. Miller and Art by Pere Perez.  This issue was much better than I expected.  I honestly thought it would be awful, but at least they kept the same writing team.  This is almost a coming of age issue in which Batgirl is accepted by Bruce and even respected.  You'll see the same thing the whole issue.  You know this guy running around in an uber-powered suit is Bruce.  How he got back?  Well, you see, the whole Return of Bruce Wayne series should be done by now, but whatever delays occured held it back.  So we see the aftermath BEFORE it resolves in the appropriate series.  Which is fine, because Grant Morrison completely dropped the ball on that storyline anyway, so who cares.  I do have a rant about this whole ordeal that I'll publish in a few days.  The story is simple, there's nothing wrong with it.  The artwork is just fine and dandy, no complaints there either.  But we get the same Stephanie we've grown to love and a decent enough story involving Bruce Wayne.  Do you need this issue?  No, but it isn't bad at all.

Booster Gold #37 - Written by J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen with Pencils by Chris Batista.  This issue follows Booster and Ted Kord who has been turned into a chipmunk during a break-out attempt of a prison ship that's about to invade Earth.  The hi-jinx are complemented this issue by a super tough prisoner named Estrogina, who is fighting her way to freedom.  Along the way she decides Booster would be a good mate, so she decides to take him with her for... later.  She also decides to eat Blue "Chipmunk", cue hilarity that is bound to follow.  Talk about a fun issue with tons of laughs.  It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the comedy involved is pretty hilarious stuff.  Everything is just plain absurd and that's what makes it even better.  Giffen and DeMatteis take the characters and just have as much fun with them as humanly possible.  This made it hard for me to decide the best title this week just because it's one of those rare unforgettable issues that will stick with me forever.  I think that alone makes it a must buy if you like crazy comedy and superhero hi-jinx.  Some of the laughs may not appeal to everyone though, but if you like that stuff, I couldn't recommend it more than I am right now.  BUY IT!

Thor #616 - Written by Matt Fraction and Art by Pasqual Ferry.  Ok, cue the theme and story from last issue, except move it nowhere.  Oh, and do nothing but double panel spreads so the comic takes about 5 minutes to read.  I'm not even going into it, besides to say that I'm disappointed with this issue.  I was interested to see what these "World Eaters" would do.  There was barely anything in here to give you the feeling that the issue was moving anywhere.  What you came out with last issue for knowledge, pretty much the same thing here.  There is one poignant panel in the end towards moving the plot forward and that's about it.  This issue is really more character focused, which is fine and all, but for $3.99, you kind of want to feel like you got more out of an issue.  I talked with a friend of mine about this issue and I asked him if it read real fast to him.  He thought about and sure enough, it read in about 5 minutes for him too.  Those two page spreads are nice as far as the artwork goes, but it got old after awhile.  There are 9 two page spreads in this. NINE!  I know Fraction is overworked right now, but we didn't need him for this title.  Bad move by Marvel.  Only buy if you want to feel like you just got $3.99 stolen from you, unless you're buying it just for Pasqual's artwork.

Shadowland #4 - Written by Andy Diggle and Penciled by Billy Tan.  Crap starts going down quick in this issue as the heroes launch a major last ditch offensive on Daredevil.  That is the entire issue.  All of it.  So I just talked about how quick Thor read, this one read pretty quick too.  It was moved forward by a lot of action though as well.  So can the heroes stop the resurrection of Bullseye?  I'm not huge on major battle issues, but we all knew this one was coming so it isn't that bad.  The scenes are a little confusing in parts and I dislike how Billy Tan draws the Punisher.  There honestly isn't much memorable in this issue and I'm left feeling like next issue is the important one.  This one just didn't feel important when I got to the end of it.  That's just my feeling though.  I thought Billy Tan's artwork was ok, not all that impressive this issue.  The colors just didn't seem to fit this issue either.  I almost felt like Wolverine's costume was almost glowing in some spots it was such a bright blue.  Ugh!  This is just an ok issue in what has been a pretty good major event so far, take it or leave it.

Quick Comic Book Reviews–August 19th, 2010

Huge set of reviews here folks!  I’ve got plenty more stuff I’m reading, but boy, having a third kid under the age of 4 really takes away most of your time.  I’m struggling to read all this stuff, let alone write about it.  Anyway, hope you enjoy!

batman703Batman #703 – Written by Fabian Nicieza and Artwork by Cliff Richards.  A Fabian Nicieza issue of Batman! Boy, does that have me stoked, but Fabian has always been one of my favorite writers.  He doesn’t do anything that takes your breath away, but just tells good, solid, interesting stories.  This is the story of Batman losing track of a new Getaway Genius and trying to track this one down.  Of course, Batman doesn’t know it isn’t the original (or does he?) and trying to figure out how to do so.  Well, it also appears that Vicki Vale is getting inside info on where the Genius will strike next.  So Dick Grayson confronts her about the Batman insinuations she has been making recently, trying to expose who Batman and Robin really are.  So there’s some build-up for another big plot down the road.  This is one of those self-contained issues where you read the whole story and you’re pretty much done.  But it’s a really fun story and these are the kind of stories I really enjoy as well.  The artwork doesn’t do much for me.  The facials are pretty good, but Cliff Richards’ style just leaves me cold.  But the story made up for it and the art wasn’t terrible, just not my cup of tea.  This is worth picking up if you’re looking for a comic that you can pick-up and read just to test it out this month.

avccru2Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #2 of 4 – Written by Allan Heinberg and Penciled by Jim Cheung.  The supposed spiritual heirs of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are a part of the Young Avengers.  Wiccan and Speed.  They are on a quest to try and find the Scarlet Witch to help Wiccan maintain control of his powers.  However, Magneto also has the same idea.  In this issue, we have a run-in with the New Avengers who believe Magneto is up to no good.  Throw in a guest appearance of Quicksilver and this issue is really pretty interesting.  I managed to completely miss the first issue and I’m kind of sorry I did.  I really like Jim Cheung’s artwork and the big Avengers fight scene is great.  So the art really adds to this issue.  I think, overall, this is an outstanding issue with a purpose.  I’m actually very interested to see what happens next.  This could be a great mini-series!  Check it out!

amazspid641The Amazing Spider-Man #641 – Written by Joe Quesada and art by Paolo Rivera and also Joe Quesada, Danny Miki, and Richard Isanove.  So we reach the final installment of “One Moment In Time” storyline.  We see what finally happened to drive the relationship apart in this alternate reality.  Well, let me just say this.  This is the most piss poor excuse for a Spider-Man story ever.  Joe hinted that it was a story to bring Mary Jane and Peter back together, but instead, it’s to drive the final wedge into their relationship so that it’s finally over and he can probably get rid of MJ.  The only good thing from this run is that Paolo Rivera is a pretty decent artist.  Quesada’s artwork has been terrible and he’s really just become a hack.  I’m so glad he’s done with the series now so that we can get back to some real stories.  I was excited about this story at first, but man, he took it in a different direction than anyone expected and gave us a very forgettable story.  It wasn’t interesting at all.  The drama was pretty non-existent.  I guess when you’re the Editor in Chief you can push crap out the door and people will tell you it is good.  Hear that Didio and your terrible Outsiders issues?  But anyway, don’t pick this up, don’t waste your time, Quesada shows that he doesn’t connect with the Spider-Man audience.

batrobin14Batman and Robin #14 – Written by Grant Morrison and Artwork by Frazier Irving.  This is part two of “Batman and Robin Must Die!” and as bizarre and macabre as it is, a wild and fascinating romp.  Robin attempts to take out the Joker, but alas, it was a set-up by the Joker the whole time.  Commissioner Gordon is kidnapped by Pyg’s piglike perps of putridness.  I don’t want to give too much away, but darn is it a wild one folks.  The story flows very fast and reaches a heart pounding pace as the good guys try to outwit the bad guys who are all but stepping on each other.  The artwork in this issue grew on me a bit.  Once again, not a style I liked, but it does portray the rather nightmarish images in a realistic sort of way.  At times, it’s like an insane hallucination frame-by-frame.  As much as I didn’t like it last issue, to me, with Grant Morrison’s crazy writing style, yeah, the art fits.  I’m not crazy about it, but it has a noir feel which I think is really some of the stylization that we’re going for here.  Overall, this issue a roaring romp of a good time, so pick it up!

secretsix25Secret Six #25 – Written by Gail Simone and Art by J. Calafiore.  So we throw out the storyline from the last issue because apparently it was just a weird thing they decided to do.  So we have our two Secret Six teams out there on their own missions and their paths are about to cross.  Bane and Jeanette are leading up a team that now includes King Shark, Giganta, Lady Vic and Dwarfstar.  Catman’s team consists of Scandal Savage, Ragdoll, Deadshot and Black Alice.  What’s this?  You didn’t know there were two teams either?  Well join the club, because apparently they don’t like each other.  I guess there was something that went on awhile back that happened but it didn’t, but now it did, or… ok… this issue has some great moments, but it is a giant WTF moment.  I have no idea what missions these teams are on, why they’re on them or anything.  I’m completely lost for a second issue in a row.  At least the previous issue some things made sense if we’re just playing pretend in that one.  This however… just ugh!  I love Calafiore’s artwork and he has some key facial expressions that he hits dead on in here.  It is as twisted as always, but also a chaotic mess that leaves you tapping out waiting for some sort of logical explanation.  Poor storytelling and mass confusion makes this a must miss.

shadowland3Shadowland #3 – Written by Andy Diggle and Pencils by Billy Tan.  The third issue of the soon to be epic.  We get a better glimpse at what Daredevil is truly becoming in this issue as we see things spiraling out of control.  The heroes are turned back and have to make decisions on what to do.  The Punisher returns in his normal form again and Ghost Rider is fully back in business.  The return of the Punisher to his normal form isn’t even recognized or mentioned by the other heroes.  Not even a “I thought you were dead!”  Nope, just, “hey Pun, how you doing.  Shoot anyone lately?”  Tarantula shows deepening concern for affairs here.  Moon Knight is taking on a more active role.  There’s some good spots, but I just don’t get the Punisher part.  Maybe they’ll retcon his death.  This IS Marvel after all and they can do that.  The artwork is pretty decent and is really matching moodiness, but it was a tad brighter overall this issue.  Another really solid issue with one huge gap in logic, but still a good series to read as Matt Murdock’s decent into madness continues.

btgirl14Batgirl #14 – Written by Bryan Q. Miller and Penciled by Lee Garbett.  In this issue, Supergirl drops in for a guest appearance and wants to hang with our Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, for a day of fun.  What starts as a day of fun quickly goes awry due to a messed up science experiment (do science experiments ever go right in comics?) and we have carnage on our hands.  The experiment manages to create 24 vampires that the girls have to kill.  It’s a crazy and fun romp with some witty zingers and just hilarious dialogue.  Whoever Bryan Q. Miller is, he does some darned good work.  Yeah, the story itself is kind of weak, but it’s made up for by the characters cutting loose and having fun.  It doesn’t take itself seriously, so that helps.  I’ve liked this Batgirl the best so far, plus her costume is probably the best designed one I’ve seen.  Overall, she’s been a great character and her series has been pretty decent.  The artwork by Garbett is great.  He even captures great eye-rolling moments, and captures a great image of a vampire riding a Segue scooter that made me about die laughing.  Awesome job, pick up this campy but fun issue of Batgirl and have some great laughs.

teentitans86Teen Titans #86 – Written by Felicia D. Henderson and Penciled by Jose Luis.  Well, we continue from last issue and the Wyld creature or whatever it is.  It possesses Miss Martian and is attempting to kill off Raven.  So we see the whole Titans team trying to take care of business and rescue her.  I’m not exactly sure what all is going on in this issue, but it has some moments.  Garth’s overzealousness to rescue Raven shines through as we know about his feelings for her.  Wonder Girl and Superboy continue their romance (yawn already) and the only character that I really like, Kid Flash has like one line I think.  But anyway, this story does show that this comic can and may be turning around.  We then have the Coven of Three back-up feature.  Written by Rex Ogle and Art by Ted Naifeh.  I’m not big on this whole Coven of Three, but I was a tad surprised with this one.  Enchantress isn’t quite like I remember her either, but that’s ok.  So our heroes (?) are trying to find their three avatars to supposedly fend off impending doom.  So the search begins to find them, but just when everything looks good, things go awry.  But it has an interesting surprise at the end that got a chuckle out of me.  A mostly “meh” issue, but nothing deplorable, just slightly below average, certainly not worth rushing out to get.

daredevil510Daredevil #510 – Written by Andy Diggle and Anthony Johnston and Art by Marco Checchetto.  Foggy Nelson and Dakota North try to play it safe and fail miserably.  Meanwhile the city is going crazy and insane things are happening.  Tarantula falls even further from grace and questions the unhinged and possessed Murdock.  The artwork here is fantastic and really captures the essence of everything going on.  It’s kept dark enough, but it isn’t quite the sketchy art in the last few issues and that’s ok, because this works.  I love this story as Daredevil is one bad brother who is hell-bent on his style of justice and nothing else will do.  However, I just feel like we all know how this one ends.  He’ll be exorcised and then run off for a year or something because he feels bad for all that he’s done, yadda yadda.  But they could surprise me and Diggle would be just the kind of guy who would throw you a curveball and set you down swinging.  But this issue is excellent.  One of the best issues yet!  If you haven’t been reading the Shadowland stuff, this is the issue to buy and buy now!

Quick Comic Book Reviews–August 28th, 2010

uxmen526Uncanny X-Men #526 –
Written by Matt Fraction and Pencilled by Whilce Portacio.  So the main plot is that 5 new mutants showed up and their powers haven’t manifested yet, so it’s time to find them before the bad guys get in the way.  But, why is it that the back-up story involving Magneto and his “grandsons” is the more interesting story in this issue.  Matt Fraction gives a valiant effort, but he doesn’t seem to have the whole dynamics of the group down yet.  Plus I think Whilce Portacio phoned it in on him.  Whilce seems to be just drawing to draw and must have needed some extra bucks, because I just don’t feel him being at his best.  When Hope finds out her parents died she and was talking about it at first, the facially expression couldn’t have matched what she was feeling.  The artwork just felt a little soulless and maybe that how Whilce feels drawing the X-Men, but he isn’t doing his writer any favors.  I’m interested in finding out what Hope can do and how the next breed of X-Men will turn out.  But the sub-plots in this one are weak and contrived, except for the Kitty Pryde part.  I don’t feel they’re following up on the fall-out from Second Coming very well.  We should be feeling heavier repercussions than any mutant series is really dealing with and that’s too bad, because I thought Second Coming was a good X-Men crossover.  This stuff is ok, but nothing spectacular.

dd509Daredevil #509 – Written by Andy Diggle and Penciled by Roberto De La Torre.  Ever get a case of déjà vu?  That’s what this felt like.  Andy Diggle has had some hits and misses in this Shadowland event, but I felt like I knew about the same at the end of this issue as I did at the beginning.  There are a few new bits of information, but nothing too interesting that skipping it doesn’t seem to be a big deal.  The artwork is good, but not in a classic comic book approach.  Everything is very washed out and dark and forboding, which I guess suits it well enough.  The way this one is going, next issue they’ll cover it again anyway.  So if you read last issue, just read Shadowland #2 and skip this one.

bright8Brightest Day #8 –
Written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi and Pencilled by Ardian Syaf, Ivan Reis, and Patrick Gleason.  I thought LOST was over, but this comic book keeps me about as frustrated as when I was watching LOST.  This issue is largely Martian Manhunter and Hawkworld centric, and boy is it bad.  In fact, they pretty much rip off an entire scene from LOST, but oh well.  A boring issue with nothing really important seeming to happen.  Any surprises fall flat on their collective faces.  Just a walking crap fest.  The artwork is uninspired except for the nicely pencilled first few pages.  I can’t figure out what the hell their doing with this storyline, if maybe they’re trying to do a reinvent of “52”, but it’s a poor attempt at that.  If you avoid buying one issue out of my list, avoid buying this turd.

glc51Green Lantern Corps #51 – Written by Tony Bedard and Pencilled by Ardian Syaf.  The story improved from last issue and the artwork is decent, supported well by the brilliant colors in this issue.  So our fair Lanterns are still trying to survive the nefarious Cyborg-Superman who has taken over the Alpha Lanterns.  Cyborg-Supe has Ganthet and Stel pretty much held hostage and there are some interesting moments involving that in this issue.  Bedard does a good job at making sure that despite the human side we sometimes see from Hank Henshaw (aka Cyborg-Superman), he’s still a right evil bastard that deserves contempt.  We also have a surprise return of a Lantern which is completely ruined by the front cover, but Hannu returns and that is also interesting considering how he’s feeling about the Corps right now.  Nothing really wrong with this issue, it just kind of flies by though and you don’t feel like you got a whole lot of story out of it.  Just an average, decent sort of issue, no need to rush yourself out to buy it or anything.

acad3Avengers Academy #3 – Written by Christos Gage and Pencilled by Mike McKone.  Well, McKone’s artwork is much better this issue, if still a tad inconsistent at times, but it is getting there.  In this issue our cadets get a scared-straight trip to the Raft.  Also we get to know Hazmat much better and see her origin as well.  Valkyrie’s guest teaching are humorous to say the least.  I kind of wish we would see more out of Speedball, and I’m sure we will, as he continues to cope with the past in his own way.  To me, that’s really interesting stuff.  There’s a lot of characters to juggle here and some of them are bound to get overlooked in some issues.  The story is solid and fun and we get a crossover with the Thunderbolts that continues there.  The characters continue to grow and are very interesting.  There are a few hokey moments with the Thunderbolts, but nothing too bad. So this issue is a definite must, especially if you’ve been following to this point.

zat4Zatanna #4 – Written by Paul Dini and Pencilled by Chard Hardin.  Well Viva Las Vegas!  Zatanna is set to open up a new show in Vegas and has to contend with the Royal Flush Gang (who are constantly changing anymore, but I still like them) and then prepare for her big night.  Things just don’t turn out as planned.  Need I say more?  Paul Dini continues to keep Zatanna surprisingly fresh, funny, and bold.  This issue is no different.  A lot of sub-plot being worked in and it will be interesting to see where this new story arc will go.  Suffice it to say, this is going to be one fun ride.  I still can’t believe how boring Zatanna used to be, but she’s gone a complete 360 under the right team.  Chad Hardin does a very good job of visuals and those visuals help complete the story.  The subtle things some artists would miss, he really doesn’t.  He uses the medium to help the writer in the telling of the story, and I love that.  Pick this book up and pick it up NOW!

thund147Thunderbolts #147 – Written by Jeff Parker and Pencilled by Kev Walker.  We pick up, not only, from last issue, but also from Avenger’s Academy #3 (and #4 which isn’t released yet).  There’s a power outage we saw on the Raft and the questions as to why it happened.  We also see the Thunderbolts dealing with the actual power outage, which leads to many interesting moments.  Moonstone does pretty much exactly what is always expected of her.  Juggernaut showcased some interesting things as well.  I’m curious to see where they go with the terrigen mutation incident and if there’s anything more to it that we’ll see in future issues.  Next issue we get another detour into Shadowland, but hopefully it’ll be pain free for us readers.  Parker really does another great job of scripting what could have been a very boring story and making it interesting.  I have a feeling he has some surprises waiting for us, just wish I could tell what.  The artwork has a grim stylization to it that fits the stories being told.  A fun read, but I’m borderline about calling it a buy.

Quick Comic Reviews – July 31st, 2010

Just a quick rundown of some things that are recent that I’ve been reading the past few weeks.  Maybe you’ll find this helpful if you’re looking to buy some of these new titles.

234214Shadowland #1 – So now we see what’s going on with the Daredevil after he’s taken a break in the Marvel Universe.  First off, he’s got a new costume which looks pretty appropriate and he’s taken of the Hand.  The heroes of the Marvel Universe are starting to worry about Matt Murdock’s state of mind as well.  In this issue we see Daredevil eventually square off with Bullseye and we see exactly what Murdock is now capable of.  The artwork is alright but inconsistent in spots.  The problem with the issue is the content seems to go way too fast.  For what you pay, you feel like you just got started and it is over.  But an interesting but not totally necessary issue.  Decent, not a buy for me.

234503Daredevil #508 – A bit stronger in story than in the first issue of Shadowland and fantastic artwork.  Wow, everything is so grim and moody and the artwork of Roberto De Le Torre is right on spot here.  I feel that perpetual rain and feeling of something foreboding in the air.  Excellent issue as things pick up a bit and we have a few plot twists involved and some questions to be answered.  We all know eventually Matt Murdock will pull free of this, but part of me likes him more as this dark vigilante who is maintaining the peace with an unwavering hand.  Definite Buy!

  233467

Captain America #607 – First, I can’t tell whether the inker or the penciller is being way too lazy on some pages or what.  Sometimes Cap looks like he was drawn by an 8 year old and inked in by the same 8 year old.  I can’t figure it out.  Then some pages are very strong, so I’m not sure I get it.  The story was ok as we get more involved with Baron Zemo’s master manipulations.  Common fair, get tired of the Nazi stuff after awhile, but whatever.  Then we also get a back-up story involving Nomad.  This isn’t as strong a follow-up to the story in last issue, but it’s decent fair with good artwork and bright vivid colors.  If you’re a fan of the Young Allies, this is a must.  Otherwise, it is decent, but not quite there.

234649 The Avengers #3 – At first I wasn’t sure about John Romita as the artist for the Avengers.  I take it back, I’m starting to enjoy it.  He’s got kind of a sketchy style without being overly detailed and it’s the kind of artwork that’s sometimes missing in comics today.  Simple artwork, good crisp colors, with him and Bendis, it feels like a true Avengers comic.  The last few years the Avengers have been at the low point in their history and it’s nice to see we can get back to Heroes being Heroes again.  I really liked this issue for some reason.  It was fun, had a fast paced story and had a lot of good moments and the artwork did a splendid job.  If you like the old Avengers, I feel this is a must buy!

235306 The Flash #4 – So far, Geoff Johns is writing a pretty good series here.  This book is a bit quicker of a read then I would like.  You have a sequence that should only take up 2 pages take up several and it feels like that is probably just so they can have a reveal at the end.  That can be a problem now days with the main writers doing several stories every month in different titles.  In a way, you can’t blame them for it.  However, with the price of comics, I hate these lazy habits.  So other than that little rant, a decent story, some facts (or are they?) revealed and the story continues on.  Due to the several page gimmick though, we don’t feel like we got very far in the issue and that is disappointing.  Buy if you’re a Flash fan, otherwise you can probably skip it.

232175 Young Allies #1 – I’m a sucke r for the newer Nomad and her sad story of being without a world and really, without a home.  Gravity is a character that really interests me and seeing just what exactly he is capable of.  Firestar has always been a solid character, so a chance at a new fun team title, I figure why not.  We see right away that they’re going to be dealing with those nasty Bastards of Evil.  A good first arch-team to face-off with.  We get an interesting new character in Toro and the now powerless Arana is back.  A decent little title with great artwork!  In fact, some very excellent artwork that has bright and bold colors and doesn’t feel dark and dreary.  Has some very interesting scenes in it and an interesting ending that makes me want to dive into the next one and see how they handle this!  Definite buy!
